About nine months ago I watched the documentary, A Walk To Beautiful. It was probably one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever watched. I never realized something that is almost unheard of in this country is so rampant in countries like Ethiopia. These girls got under my skin and I think about them almost everyday.
An obstetric fistula is a hole that forms between the uterus and the bladder and/or the uterus and bowel. It causes a young women or girl to be incontinent of urine and stool. It is caused by traumatic laboring resulting when the baby is too big to come out. Sadly, the baby usually dies and the girl must deliver ,sometimes in pieces, a stillborn child. If that isn't bad enough, now she must live the rest of her life banished from her family and village because she cannot control her urine and /or stool. She becomes a leper and has to live like a wild animal.
This epidemic stems from so many factors. Girls are very small framed since they lack proper nutrition and have spent the majority of their lives carrying heavy water jugs or bundles of wood. There are no hospitals and these women are forced to labor in their huts for sometimes up to two weeks.
Please take the time to read about the Fistula Foundation. It is such a beautiful organization to support. You would be supporting your fellow women of the world. They have just as much a right to a safe delivery as we do. And please, Watch, A Walk To Beautiful. You can watch the entire episode below and it might change your life. It changed mine.
